“MAKING OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE IS MY TOP PRIORITY...”
Julian Castro Formally Accepts Endorsement From the San Antonio Police Officers Association

San Antonio, Texas - Today on the front steps of City Hall, Julian Castro, with his forward-thinking campaign to succeed term-limited incumbent Phil Hardberger as San Antonio Mayor, received the endorsement of the San Antonio Police Officers Association. Joined by the leadership of the association, Castro outlined his plan for fighting crime and increasing public safety.

“Making our communities safe is my top priority, and it’s the men and women of the San Antonio Police Department who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all citizens. I look forward to working with the San Antonio Police Officers Association,” said Castro. Castro pledges to work with the city council and to fully support innovative ways to fight crime.

“We need to be aggressive about fighting crime, Julian will provide the forward thinking we need which will enable our officers to do their job better. We need to ensure that the entire city leadership is aligned and supporting the work and goals of our police force. We believe Julian Castro is the candidate who will best provide the resources and leadership we need to keep San Antonio safe,“ said Michael F. Helle, President of the San Antonio Police Officers Association. Castro commended San Antonio police officers for the duties they perform on a daily basis in protecting and ensuring the safety of all citizens in San Antonio.

“I proudly accept the endorsement of the San Antonio Police Officers Association. The most fundamental task of a city government is to keep its residents safe, and everyday our police officers risk their lives to do just that. As mayor, I will work hard to ensure that San Antonio becomes America's safest big city. By providing our officers the resources they need to fight crime and by partnering with the community, we will make our neighborhoods safer,” said Castro.

“Julian has a vision for the safety of San Antonio and we feel under his leadership as Mayor he will tirelessly advocate for the men and women in uniform. He fully realizes how important it is to work with our association and the rank and file in the department without compromising sound financial principles in the process. Julian understands how difficult our job can be and the dangers we encounter while out on patrol,” explained David Gonzalez, the associations’ Political Action Committee Chairman.

The San Antonio Police Officers Association has been in existence for more than 60 years and has a membership of more than 2,100 police officers. The association’s primary responsibility is to promote and protect brotherhood among the membership. Castro, a native of San Antonio, is a graduate of Stanford and Harvard Law School. He served on the city council from 2001 to 2005 representing District 7.
